I do not know how thoroughly Tolstoi researched early Christian and early Post-Republic Roman life, but I found myself there when I read this book. Even so, this book was mostly a series of debates between philosophers that could have occurred in almost any period. The materialistic actions and thoughts of the young middle class Roman named Julius echoes in the colleges and corporations of modern America and Europe. By contrast, the life of the young Christian named Pamphilius looks nothing like the modern American church goer. In truth, I think today's evangelicals and Catholics are much more like Julius than Pamphilius. I do not think it is even possible to emulate exactly such a life as the little commune of believers described here, but it is a clear call to me personally to live simply, to care not for the things of this world, but to always patiently and humbly show compassion for my fellow humans.Product details
