definitely a great read. want to know how beer went from small breweries to industrial operations? you can read about it in here. want to know how the breweries came up with porter, then switched to pale ales? read this then pale ales, and you will understand a good bit of british brewing history. want to know where stouts come from? read this. definitely a good read, but in need of some updating, and could use some discussion of baltic porter and american (robust) porter. if you like the style you should read this though.

Really good book about my favorite beer style. You get the impression Foster likes his topic, and would fun to have a pint with.
I have read two books out of the styles series, the porter and the stout. The juxtaposition between the two is surprising. Both authors vaguely claim that their style came first. My biggest gripe about the Porter book is that he really doesn't cite anything. Other times negates information that I had never heard. He mentions at one point that a story which we have all heard (which I had never heard) about the origins of Porter is actually wrong and etc. That doesn't do much for me.

In the end you are reading about a style made from malt that doesn't exist any more (brown). I don't think there is anyway to make a porter from that time so using this book to produce a BJCP porter won't be of much help.

I still got some things out of it, and its relatively cheap.
